Scott Jarvis hitting out in the Cobham Avorians win against Chessington in the Twenty 20 competition.
Sunbury 268 all out Cobham Avorians 121 all out
I
Avorians Fail To Fulfil Early Promise
Three wickets in the first five overs raised the spirits of the visiting Avorians team at Sunbury, but that was as good as it got, and the Avorians lost heavily to the Premier Division title chasers. Put into bat, Sunbury were soon in trouble when Scott Jarvis took the wicket of Kuiper with the first ball of the match, and Cliff Hill followed up in the next over, trapping Spencer LBW. When Jarvis took his second victim, London, in the fifth over, Sunbury were reeling at 18 for 3. However, Maunders, and Sunbury captain, Roland-Jones, steadied the ship, with the former eventually falling one run short of his half-century and the latter just making his 50. There was a brief revival for the Avorians, with three quick wickets after lunch, but resistance from Stanier and Smith turned into aggression, and the pair punished the bowlers in the later overs before Smith was caught and bowled by Steve Naylor for 43 to end the innings. Stanier remained unbeaten, contributing 63 to the Sunbury total of 268 all out. In reply, the Avorians offered little. Graham Crawford, who had destroyed Chessington in midweek with an unbeaten 96, was dismissed for a single, while Reece O’Connell, continuing his struggle for any sort of form, went for the same score, and the promise shown by Luc Durandt with two imperious boundaries, petered out with an LBW decision in favour of Lewis.
Steve Naylor showed what could be done, building a steady innings before being caught for 43, but his only support came, too late, from Steve Harpley, who treated the bowling with disdain for a quickfire 33. There was nothing to come from the Avorians’ tail, and the visitors were all out for a disappointing 121. The Avorians must now hope for an early return to fitness for DJ Umpleby and Ian Cockbain, and a return to form for Reece O’Connell to get the side heading back up the table.

Summer Ball 15th August details
Invitations to the Summer Ball have been issued to the King and Queen of the Fair-ies. Whether Oberon and Titania will actually attend is uncertain, but if they do come they will certainly feel at home, as the Ball this year will be on the theme of a Midsummer Night‟s Dream. For one night only, Hayley Arksey and her Social Com-mittee intend to turn the Ball marquee into the theatre in the forest for an ivy-strewn spectacular.
Invariably, the Summer Ball is not only the largest, and most fun, social occasion of the season, it is the biggest fund-raiser, too, and the Social Committee intend to make this year‟s ball the best, and most successful, ever.
In recent seasons, the Sum-mer Ball has become more and more accessible, with the emphasis changing from an out-and-out money-spinner to a grand social occasion that also raises much-needed funds for the club. The obligatory envelopes on tables and the high ticket prices are things of the past, and, while there are still plenty of fund-raising ac-tivities, all of them are purely voluntary, and, with the credit crunch upon us, tickets this year have been reduced again.
A single ticket to the Ball will cost a maximum of £45, and the Social Committee is work-ing to bring that price down even further, hopefully to £40. For that, patrons get to par-take in a sumptuous multi-course dinner and dance until the small hours to a quality disco. Your editor attended the
Ball for the first time last sea-son, and was knocked-out by the fantastic food, entertain-ment, and bonhomie, and we will be first in the queue for tickets this season.
Those tickets are already on sale. They can either be bought outright, or paid for in instalments between now and the event. Please contact Hayley Arksey for further de-tails. The Summer Ball will be held in the specially-erected marquee at Convent Lane on August 15th. Put the date in your diary now!
The show closed with a spec-tacle that might have graced a Hollywood blockbuster as a single rocket soared from its holder and, instead of heading straight up, arced in a precise path to the car park and the centre of the massive bonfire which immediately burst into a mass of flames to warm the spectators.
With hot food in the club-house, and the warmth of the bonfire, the damp and the chill were easily ignored, and another social success was chalked up.
Firework displays do not „just
happen‟, and the cat was let out of the bag when „Mrs Ash‟ revealed that Ash spends days prior to the display with a spreadsheet and a pricelist, designing his production and budgeting to achieve the best possible display for the avail-able funds. The club is mas-sively grateful to Ash and his soaking, cold, helpers for all their efforts in producing such a great show.
It rained and it rained and it rained, and Ash Golder‟s mas-terpiece was almost ruined. But the club spirit won through, and the Cobham Avorians Bonfire Night and Firework Display took place, albeit in front of a smaller than usual audience and with the occasional damp squib. The firework display would have been splendid in any circumstances, and can only be described as „magnificent‟ in the conditions as Ash and his band of helpers splashed through puddles to launch their rockets, lighting up the sky with the impressively co-ordinated pyrotechnics.
Anything but a damp squib!

Net Work News
It would take too many pages of this web site to detail the saga of the club’s application for grants to build a new net facility. Lost paperwork, changed application forms, and bureaucratic circles within loops have all served to delay the application. But, we just might be getting close. The total cost of the installation has been quoted as £28,555. This quote forms part of the grant application, and must be followed, as the grant funding does not come to the club. The Foundation for Sports and the Arts has offered the club a grant of £10,000, The Surrey County Cricket Trust has offered a further £3,000, and the Lords Taverners another £3,000. However, these grants are dependent upon also receiving a grant from Awards for All for £7,990, and it is this application for which the club is awaiting news. It is a bit like Dragon’s Den. If you do not get offered the full amount, you leave with nothing.
If we are to get the nets built for use this season, then we must be ready to act as soon as the grant comes through. To this end, the club committee has appointed a sub-committee to project manage the installation. The first task of the sub-committee is to decide how best to site the installation.
There are several different options available, including mix-and-match solutions. The options include a three-lane net where the tennis courts are situated, or a two lane net and retain one court, or put a new two-lane net where the old nets were situated, and turn the tennis courts into a car park, or try to resurrect the tennis club and refurbish the existing car park, or put a mat wicket on the square for practice and Academy matches, or site the net and a mat wicket at the far side of the ground. Or, bits of each.
The sub-committee, led by Steve Lewis, with Matt Jacobs, John Lane, Steve Harpley, and Ash Golder, will come up with the eventual proposal, but this is a topic upon which probably every playing member of the club and most social members will have an opinion. The Nets Sub-Committee would like to invite you to make your opinion known , by contacting Steve Lewis (Steve@stevelewisphotography.com) . £28, 555 is a lot of money, and it is important that it is spent meeting the wishes of the majority of the club. If you want to be part of the decision-making process, please contact Steve with your views as soon as possible. It will be too late when the nets are built exactly where you did not want them!
