Cobham
Avorians Cricket Club
Convent Lane, Cobham.
Nestling in the woods of Burhill Estate in Cobham and adjoining Notre Dame school,
the Avorians are a cricket club embued with a rich history
and a spirit which belies our passion for the game. Having
formed in 1928, the club has grown over the years
to now boast two adult XI's, a Sundays game, and a
thriving Colts section providing regular games and training
for nearly a hundred local boys and girls.

Summer Ball 15th August details
Invitations to the Summer Ball have been issued to the King and Queen of the Fair-ies. Whether Oberon and Titania will actually attend is uncertain, but if they do come they will certainly feel at home, as the Ball this year will be on the theme of a Midsummer Night‟s Dream. For one night only, Hayley Arksey and her Social Com-mittee intend to turn the Ball marquee into the theatre in the forest for an ivy-strewn spectacular.
Invariably, the Summer Ball is not only the largest, and most fun, social occasion of the season, it is the biggest fund-raiser, too, and the Social Committee intend to make this year‟s ball the best, and most successful, ever.
In recent seasons, the Sum-mer Ball has become more and more accessible, with the emphasis changing from an out-and-out money-spinner to a grand social occasion that also raises much-needed funds for the club. The obligatory envelopes on tables and the high ticket prices are things of the past, and, while there are still plenty of fund-raising ac-tivities, all of them are purely voluntary, and, with the credit crunch upon us, tickets this year have been reduced again.
A single ticket to the Ball will cost a maximum of £45, and the Social Committee is work-ing to bring that price down even further, hopefully to £40. For that, patrons get to par-take in a sumptuous multi-course dinner and dance until the small hours to a quality disco. Your editor attended the
Ball for the first time last sea-son, and was knocked-out by the fantastic food, entertain-ment, and bonhomie, and we will be first in the queue for tickets this season.
Those tickets are already on sale. They can either be bought outright, or paid for in instalments between now and the event. Please contact Hayley Arksey for further de-tails. The Summer Ball will be held in the specially-erected marquee at Convent Lane on August 15th. Put the date in your diary now!
The show closed with a spec-tacle that might have graced a Hollywood blockbuster as a single rocket soared from its holder and, instead of heading straight up, arced in a precise path to the car park and the centre of the massive bonfire which immediately burst into a mass of flames to warm the spectators.
With hot food in the club-house, and the warmth of the bonfire, the damp and the chill were easily ignored, and another social success was chalked up.
Firework displays do not „just
happen‟, and the cat was let out of the bag when „Mrs Ash‟ revealed that Ash spends days prior to the display with a spreadsheet and a pricelist, designing his production and budgeting to achieve the best possible display for the avail-able funds. The club is mas-sively grateful to Ash and his soaking, cold, helpers for all their efforts in producing such a great show.
It rained and it rained and it rained, and Ash Golder‟s mas-terpiece was almost ruined. But the club spirit won through, and the Cobham Avorians Bonfire Night and Firework Display took place, albeit in front of a smaller than usual audience and with the occasional damp squib. The firework display would have been splendid in any circumstances, and can only be described as „magnificent‟ in the conditions as Ash and his band of helpers splashed through puddles to launch their rockets, lighting up the sky with the impressively co-ordinated pyrotechnics.
Anything but a damp squib!
