Cobham Cavaliers were among 14 clubs from the county appearing in the Surrey Foundation's walking cricket festival at the Oval on Tuesday. (July 22nd). This included a team from the Royal Hospital Chelsea, better known as the Chelsea Pensioners.
It was an enjoyable - and successful - day for the Cavaliers, winning two of their three eight- overs- a- side matches.
Playing on the outfield at the Vauxhall End, Cavaliers lost (by a single run) the opener against Valley End, before completing the double against regular rivals, Epsom who had entered two teams.
Alan P produced one of the Cavaliers' moments of the day with a stunning low one handed catch to his right, while Tony I was one of several batters who took home the fond memory of driving a six into the Vauxhall End stands.
Both Epsom fixtures produced close finishes with Cavaliers needing seven off the last over, and five from the last three balls in the second game.
Of course it was a day when results came second. The priority was enjoyment and making new friends, marking the success of the Foundation's rapid expansion of walking cricket, starting with just two clubs only a handful of years ago.
The Cavaliers return to league action on Monday 28 July. with their final fixture at home to Wimbledon.
Further social fixtures are planned for the remainder of the summer, which includes the recent addition of a match away at The Royal Hospital Chelsea plus a tour of the facilities and refreshments.
