New Changing Facilities
Following our promotion to the Surrey Championship Premier League, we now cannot ignore the fact that we have to improve our facilities for Colts and players alike. We have started investigations into costings for a new changing room for the Colts and Away Teams, new changing facilities for the girls, new changing facilities for the umpires and a complete rewiring of the club. These costs have now been estimated at around £25,000. This is an enormous amount for a club of our size and we will be looking into as many ways of raising immediate funds to cover this cost. We aim to complete the works by the beginning of next season. Please let us know if you would like to help with fund raising. All donations are also very welcome.

2nd September :- Surrey Champions

Read E Mail Update

Firstly can I wrap up a bit of housekeeping. The September Committee Meeting has been scheduled for 7.30pm on Thursday 14th of this month at the clubhouse. Will everyone who should be there please attend. Now back to the important bit.........

What a season! The 1's made it count when they had to and secured promotion back to the Premiership, the 2's romped home at the top of the third division with a margin of 37 points, the Sunday team played far more matches than usual, the Colts Academy went from strength to strength and we got draught Stella at the club!

Subject to me still being here after the 'Waldorf and Stadler' caption (joke, guys, joke), I look forward with relish to 2007 - not forgetting the Quiz, Fireworks Night and all other events scheduled before Christmas.

This has truly been a truly magnificent season for the A's! The role of honour above falls short of all the other unsung heroes (who know who they are) that sponsor the club, come from lands afar to play/support, come from counties afar to play/support, drive down the A3, keep the ground to county standards (and tell everyone), organise the colts, coach the colts, bring the colts along and support the bar, manage the records, protect the welfare, keep the score, update the stats, organise and play in the Sunday games (if I had a picture you'd be up there guys), take the photos, write the match reports and send them off to the press on Monday mornings, organise and pay for events out of their own pockets, drop 40 pounds to get lean and fit, donate prizes to the auctions, bid for their own donations..... Hi Cavey!

...... feed the teams, manage the accounts, keep the minutes, manage the clubhouse, organise the fixtures, make the teas, serve the drinks, stock the bar, hoover the club, chase the players, collect the lobsters....Hi Lobsters!

.... rent the marquees, buy the port, drink the port....... Hi Matt!

..... collect the leaves, paint the club, take those b***dy wheels of the covers only to put them back on 3 months later, buy 200 club tickets, let off the fireworks, take deliveries, attend off season committee meetings in arctic conditions.......

In short, everyone who makes the club the success it is today!

Finally a big thank you should be made to all the partners and families who can't work out why a game of cricket lasts from midday until midnight.... and why it has to be every Saturday/Sunday from frost-up to frost-down. To this final group of supporters, we send the biggest thanks.

To everyone else that I may have seemed to forget, I didn't....it's just that it's midnight now and I must close.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the Fireworks night (date to be announced, so keep reading the updates) and here's to a great 2007!

Got to dash now and start preparing my defence for when I'm hauled up in front to El Presidente and Chairman on the 14th.

Well done everyone!

19th August :- What a finale to the 1st Division, it may go down to the line.

This is an appraisal by a non-cricketing bystander. So Sunbury now lie first by just 4 points to the A's after losing to third place Walton last weekend. Walton now sit just 6 points behind us, with everyone having 2 matches to play. The top two teams go up to the Premiership. Sunbury have mid league (ie no reason to fight too hard) Purley at home followed by the As at home for the last game. Walton face relegation threatened Beddington away with bottom placed (but maybe in with a hope of avoiding relegation if they win this weekend) Cheam for the last game at their home ground. Walton seem in better form than Sunbury at the moment. We face Banstead at home followed by Sunbury away. If you can read it, you're a better man than I. All I know is it's going to be close!

14th August :- A weekend at the A's!

What a fabulous weekend! Fridays Colts Tournament, Saturdays 26 points from the First and Second XI, Presidents Day on Sunday and Wibbly Wobbly in the afternoon. Well, what else does the squad do during a day of torrential downpours!

Don't forget we're hosting the Quarter Final Knockout of the Seniors National Competition on Wednesday at 1.00pm. Surrey Over 50s play Derbyshire (45 Overs). Everyone welcome.

Finally, the Second XI seem to be home and dry for promotion, but the First XI (currently 2nd) face a really exciting 3 way battle over the last three matches with leaders Sunbury and chasers Walton. Go the A's!

22nd July 2006:- First XI grab a losing draw against chasing Walton and Second XI beat Cranleigh by 5 wickets and notch up 100 points.

After coming back after the rain neither side seemed to want to finish the game on Saturday. Walton never quite seemed to shine and the A's seemed to hang on in until the end of the game. The 2s had a much better day at Cranliegh coming home with 13 points in the bag to add to the 1's 1 point.

The 2006 Glorious Goodwood event has been cancelled due to uncertain numbers.

15th July 2006:- Following our downfall in the Twenty 20 against Worcester Park on Thursday, the First XI provided a textbook victory against Beddington on Saturday.

Thursdays much anticipated Twenty 20 match saw the As comprehensively batted out for little over a hundred. Ho Hum, there's always next year! The first XI made up for it by bowling out Beddington for 218 off 54.4 overs then coming out after tea and only losing two wickets before notching up 220 off 27.1 overs. (The first 120 runs coming off 12 overs). Higgs and Prich opened the batting with hard hitting displays from both before Prich fell for 38 runs. Robbie Arthur and Scumps ably assisted Higgs to the final total with Scumps scoring an average of a run per ball. Well done to the 1s. The Second XI were away to Sanderstead and although setting a target of 255 for 6 off 46.5 overs, were beaten when Sanderstead overtook their total after 48.3 overs.

Don't forget that the Glorious Goodwood and Presidents Days are fast approaching.

9th July 2006:- First XI near win away against a battling Banstead and a Second XI winning draw against Sinjungrammarians.

The Cobham Avorians are now through to the 3rd round of the 20/20 competition and play Worcester Park this Thursday evening. Worcester Park are (a decent young side who are currently 3rd in Division 3 of the championship and are the current South of England Indoor Six a side champions. A stern test for the A's!.

The A's have beaten premiership side Esher and the Met Police in previous rounds and look forward to putting up a strong performance this week. The game starts at 5.30pm at Convent Lane in Cobham. Everyone is welcome and are guaranteed a great and exciting game of cricket. In the last game the A's scored 207 in the 20 overs. This will give you an idea of how quick and high scoring these games can be.

17th June 2006:- An important win against league leaders Walton and the Second XI remain undefeated.

Well done to all our teams this week. The First XI scored an important victory against league leaders Walton and in doing so reversed our sinking trend in the First Division; we're still 4th, but are now narrowing the gap. The 2's continue their unbeaten run thanks to a tidy defeat of Cranleigh (putting them at 70 points, 25 ahead of second placed Camberley) and the U13 Colts gained valuable match experience against a strong Whiteley Village side.

Emma Bell surpassed her monumental efforts of 2005 and presented an even more lavish and exciting Summer Ball on Saturday. A great turn out of more than 150 'penguins' and 'beautiful ladies' (very high scoring this year!) enjoyed champagne in the sunshine before being invited into the marquee for continued merriment. A great deal of money was raised during the night thanks to auction items such as a fully hosted private box at Royal Ascot for 4 people kindly donated by Jerry, a bat signed by Ricky Ponting, a shirt worn by by own 'Higgsy' on his debut for Australia, a customised Gray Nicholls bat and factory tour from 'Prich', a family portrait session at Mark Lewis Photography in Windsor and various fourballs at prestigious golf clubs including Wentworth. Finally everyone took part in a a surreal World Cup game (you had to be there, come on Argentina! ED). The evening got into full swing with music from the live band complemented by various displays of dance by the team and guests. Well done Emma - What a fabulous night. Here's to topping it in 2007!

10th June 2006:- Cricket...what about the Auction Prizes?

So the 1's lost against Sunbury, the 2's deafeated the Met Police and the Colts battled valiantly against older and more experienced sides last weekend - now let's get on with the important stuff.

3rd June 2006:- Mixed Blessings

I knew we might wake up and find that it was all a dream and we couldn't keep winning every game this season. Following the First XIs win against Premier Division Esher in the Twenty 20 on Friday, their loss away to Camberley on Saturday jolted us back into reality. This small blip (hopefully?) was made up for by the Second XI beating Camberleys second team at home and widening their lead at the top of the table to 16 points. The First XI now fall to 3rd place in the First Division close on the tails of Sunbury but league leaders Walton (who have retained top spot all season) are now 16 points clear of us. The Colts Under 13s were again beaten my a much stronger Walton side and the Under 10s faired little better against Normandy. Saying that, the Colts and their coaches are putting everything into it considering it's the Academys first year of serious competition and we all congratulate their efforts.

Finally can we congratulate Jerry, Scumps and Paul for being picked again to play for Berkshire against Wales at Cardiff last Sunday. It looks like the Avorians are starting to become a good breeding ground for Minor League County Cricket sides.

Final reminder: The committe meeting scheduled for this Thursday will now take place in the Members Bar at Silvermere Golf Club as the Surrey Over 50s will be playing at the ground and are unlikely to have left before 8.00pm!

27th May 2006:- 2 Points from 2 abandoned games

A constantly wet weekend held the A's back this weekend and only delivered up 2 points from abandoned games. The First XI took the field on Saturday and the opening partnership of Mark Higgs and Auri Basu notched up 228 runs with 3rd man Tomlinson getting 16 before the rain (and tea) got to them. The weather meant that the game had to be abandoned. The second XI had a similar experience away to Warlingham without a run being scored. Friday evening had been a little kinder with the Colts Academy managing to play 2 matches. The Under 13's fought a close match succumbing in the last over to Pyford, whilst the Avorians Under 10's (62) beat the Cobshot Rascals (45) by 17 runs.

Finally, Friday sees our first match in the Shepherd Neame 20|20 Knockout cup at Esher Cricket Clubs Ground at 47 New Road, Esher. The match starts at 5.30pm this Friday 2nd June. Come down and support the boys. We will have a strong side out and have a decent chance of winning. If we can win this opening match we have 3 home ties on the trot (provided we keep winning) which should be good fun and attract a decent crowd at the ground.

20th May 2006:- 17 Points in the Surrey Championship

Seldom does a club enjoy every facet of it's organisation coming together at the same time during the same season. The A's are certainly achieving this in 2006. All our teams and squads are achieving tremendous results, they're looking great on the field, our training sessions and nets are well attended, our committee is in harmony, the bar take is well up on last year, our social events are over subscribed, our Colts Academy is over achieving in every aspect and our sponsors are smiling. What a year, what a season! Come on you A's.

On a social note, Emma and Andy are again pushing hard to find out numbers for the Summer Ball and from an administrative point of view, Peter has asked me to remind all Committee Members that the next meeting has been called for Thursday 8th June.

  • 1st XI beat Purley 1st XI
  • 2nd XI grabbed a winning draw away to Purley 2nd XI
  • Colts won against Old Woking
  • Sunday Match abandoned due to rain

16th May 2006:- 26 Points in the Surrey Championship

A great weekend with both the First and Second XI winning away at Beddington and at home to Sanderstead respectively. The First XI are now placed equal second with Cheam and Sunbury in the Surrey Championship 1st Division whilst the Second XI share top spot of the Surrey Championship 2nd XI Division 3 with Camberley. The Colts also excelled themselves against Walton in a very tough match on Friday evening. Unfortunately they lost, but it was always going to be tough as most of their players were twice the size of their colts. Rumours that 3 of Waltons squad sported beards has not yet been confirmed. With the Colts match being played at one end of the ground whilst the remaining Academy members trained at the other end, plus the First XI at net practice and many parents and members enjoying refreshments on the patio, the club was buzzing. On a social note, Emma and Andy are now pushing hard to find out numbers for the Summer Ball and from an administrative point of view, Peter has asked me to remind all Committee Members that the next meeting has been called for Thursday 8th June.

Finally can we congratulate Jeremy Hinds, Andy Umpleby and Paul Prichard for being selected to play for Berkshire in the Minor Counties League on Sunday at Truro.

6th May 2006:- A wet weekend at Cheam

OK, so we beat Byfleet a couple of weeks ago, then both Weybridge teams. Surely we couldn't go on to win the first league games of the season .....and to top it all ....make "Groundo" Lane happy? Read on.

An impulsive note from John Lane.
"Grumpy" Groundo, Cobham Avorians

"What a glorius weekend for the rejuvenated Cobham Avorians Cricket Club! The weather may not have been ideal but the club was glowing, starting with the mid week nets when both the 2nd X1 and 1st XI attended in numbers to get practice on the square. The attitudes of both sides to project an enthusiastic approach was refreshing. A lot of credit for this must be due to the lead from Andy Bell and Jeremy Hinds. Long may it continue.

The week got even better on Friday evening at the 1st Colts Academy Session with in excess of fifty (yes fifty) colts attending. The parents seemed to enjoy themselves and took libation at the club. Great I thought but then it got even better on Saturday.

All 11 second X1 players were at the ground an hour before the start and were actively netting and practicing. Then to top it off they went on to score over 250 runs for the loss of 4 wickets once the opposition eventually turned up. Enter the fold the great Gibbo who took 6 wickets, ably assisted by Baby Joe and Four Stars to dismiss Addiscombe for 55 runs. Fantastic!

The 1st X1 were unfortunate victims of the weather at Cheam whilst getting into a strong position. More reason for the taking of generous libation at the club. It even got better on Sunday morning with the Colts under 12s beating Chobham with 3 balls to go. Wonderful, all thanks to Darren Talbot, his lady wife, Ashley, Matt and Brian for all their coaching and organisation.

Cloud 9 for thr Groundo! The Sunday game was attended by 13 players, yes 13 for Cobham Avorians, and 2 of us had to drop out, thats got to be a first. We lost a closely fought game with over 400 runs being scored. The bar had an excellent take over the weekend and everyone is optimistic for the upcoming season.

So much so that Grumpy Groundo is now Gloriously "Happy" Groundo. Come on you Cobham Avorians!"

Signed: "Gloriously Happy Groundo"

First XI Match Report
Jerry Hinds, Captain First XI

Avorians won the toss and elected to put Cheam in to bat on a dull and overcast day. We only managed 31 overs but contained them to 98 for 3. It was an excellent bowling performance on a not particularly lively wicket by all those involved, namely Scott Jarvis, Steve Harper, James Lawrence, Andy Umpleby and Mark Higgs. Hopefully next week we might have a better day with the weather!!

Second XI Report
Andy Bell, Cricket Chairman
Cobham Avorians

Something is amiss! Eleven Two’s players warming up at the ground over an hour before start time! 13 points collected for a league win in May! A whole game played in drizzle without the Groundo once shaking his head! Colts Jacobs, Bell and Golder off to flying starts with the bat! Something is definitely amiss!

Having lost the toss to a youthful Addiscombe and grey clouds all around it looked like a slow opening to the league season. However, a quick start with Matt Jacobs showing all the old class for 50 in an opening partnership of 80 with Andy Bell set up the rest of the game. Addiscombe were never let off the hook as rejuvenated Ashley Golder smashed 97 and the captain 62. Even an anti – masterclass from Gib (unable to pick spotty 13 years olds doozra!) could not slow an early dec on a wet shirt front. A’s 248 for 5 declared off 48 overs.

Much planning has gone into this season but we still can’t find an answer to Carol’s teas! It seems impossible not to absolutely fill your boots and then spend the next hour waddling around thinking “Why that extra baguette?” It takes a man off ample girth to be able to handle the best tea on the circuit and then steam into the oppo with the new ball.

We had him in the form of Gibson Gib! I think it was 5 wickets in his first 4 overs but no doubt he has already talked you through it! Baby Joe built up a head of steam from the other end and Addiscombe were never going anywhere. Kingnow and Scoops came on to finish things off nice and early. The bowlers were well supported with great glove work from Pricey and good catches from Ric Coles and Russell Spicer – opps - no Jakie!!

That first Stella does taste good before 7pm! Addiscombe 62 all out in 16 overs.

Great start guys – let’s keep it going.

Frankie.

Colts Academy

Cobham Avorians U-13 68-9 (20 overs) beat Chobham U-13 62 all out (20 overs) by 6 runs.

Full Match Report and scores in detail

After losing the toss, the A's were put into bat and were soon in trouble at 26-7 despite 11 from opener James Palmer. However Avorians were saved by an unbroken last wicket partnership of 32 between Carl Vilela-Mansell and Chris Smith who raised the score to a competitive 68 off the allotted 20 overs.

In reply demon opening bowler Will "Slogger" Davis took a wicket first ball, caught by skipper Jonathan Tribe who went on to take 4 excellent catches.
Chobham were soon in trouble at 28-6 thanks to some very accurate bowling from all the attack. Special mention to our two ten year olds, leg-spinner Dominic Worth and seamer Ewan McTaggart who both bowled very accurate
spells. George Mather took two wickets in two balls to dismantle Chobham's middle order but a late partnership of 24 for the 8th wicket took the match
into the last over with 7 required. An excellent last over from man of the match James Palmer kept things tight and Chris Smith ran out the last
batsman on the last ball of the match to secure a very tense victory, out first win in our first match in the league! The next match is in the ECB National Knockout Cup at home to Walton-on-Thames on Friday evening 6pm start.

We had 21 players last month so it would be great to push that number on again. Bring a mate. Give Andy Bell a ring with any queries and to confirm attendance on 07785 795088

Grand National this Saturday: All 50 places have now been fully allocated so we look forward to seeing you for what should be a very entertaining afternoon. All the upcoming social events can be seen on our website www.avorianscc.co.uk

New TV in the Clubhouse: To complement our new projector and screen we now have a new (to us) 32" widescreen TV in the clubhouse kindly donated by Tom Barr. Will our supporters kindly remember to come outside now and again to watch the match going on there!

Nets Practise: The seniors nets are progressing well on Monday evenings and the Colts nets start this Friday
