The afternoon will conclude with a barbeque and prize giving.
- 15th August 2005 -Cricket Results
With both matches being abandoned due to rain, both the first and second XI gained just one point with the first XI sitting in 5th place and the second just above the relegation zone.
Committee Meeting
The next meeting, scheduled for this Thursday has been put back until Thursday 1st September at 8.00pm in the Clubhouse. As this will be the last meeting of the playing season, all committee members and other interested parties are strongly urged to attend.

Weybridge match 21st August cancelled due to Weybridge having to play in a League match that day. Academy season extended to Friday 2nd September. Special Academy session on 26th August with an inter-club tournament starting at 4pm followed by BBQ and Prize Giving. Watch this space for team news week beginning 22nd August!
- 30th July - Avorians Colt selected for Surrey County Under 9 Squad, First XI beat Bank of England and the Second XI match against Addiscome abandoned due to rain.
Weekend Results - 1st XI beat Bank of England at home. The A's won the toss and put the Bank team into bat. Bank of England achieved 139 all out off 46.3 overs. Dodging the rain showers, and with no passing buses in sight (Cavey!), the A's replied with 140-5 in just 19.4 overs to win the match and gain a valuable 13 points placing them fourth in the league with 77 points. Congratulations to Matthew for his 86. (Match Report) (Tables) The 2nd XI's match away to abandoned due to the rain (2nd XI Results)
Colts Academy - The Colts match v Weybridge which was rained off last week has been re-arranged for Sunday 21st August. The final Colts Friday session of the season, 26th August, will be a special elongated session with an inter-club competition and player of the year awards afterwards. This session will commence at 4pm and we are hoping to put on a BBQ subject to the weather behaving itself for once. All welcome, hope you can make it.
Avorian Colt selected for Surrey County Under 9 Squad Congratulations to Dominic Worth who has become the first Academy member to attain County recognition. Dominic has been selected for the Surrey Under 9 squad following a recent trial the Academy recommended him for. Good luck Dominic!
FfK - Colts Sponsor 2005 - Ffk have now 'launched' the www.fuelforkids.com website. It gives information about the brand and what they're up to......It's work in progress and will be upgraded continually, but it's a start....... Meanwhile, Chris Banks is pleased to report that Ffk water, plain and simple is now stocked in the bar at Avorians; and by Farrants in the High Street, Cobham and other good local shops. We told them about our support of the Avorians Academy and they were pleased to support us in return!! You know where to refuel!
Ffk Water - Did you know that up to two thirds of children and young people don't drink enough fluid during the average day, let alone when taking part in sport? That's why Ffk, the people who make healthy food and drink for active young poeple and who are sponsors of the Avorians Colts Academy, have added bottled water to their range of products. Ffk Water, plain and simple is packaged in 500ml bottles with a striking label in the Ffk colours of blue, silver and white and orange, making it the cool water for active young poeple. Ffk Water, plain and simple. Ask for it by name and enjoy!!
- 24th July - First XI and Second XI defeated by Sutton and Pyrford respectively. Having won their last 2 matches the First XI hoped for another to give them the hat-trick on Saturday. Having lost the toss, Sutton put them in to bat and the A's achieved a respectable 236 all out off 52 overs; David Umpleby notching up 53 runs. Sutton came in to bat and after 42 overs the A's score had been overtaken for the fall of just 2 wickets with J Fry and D Sampson getting 128 and 76 respectively.
The second XI won the toss and elected to put Pyrford in to bat setting a target of 225 all out after 46 overs. After watching Pyrfords G Walters bowl out 5 of our team for just 25, the A's batting let them down and they finally capitulated for 132 off just 30.3 overs.
I've yet to hear how the Colts got on against Weybridge or how Peter's Sunday Team did, so check the site during the week.
Six matches to play until the end of the season. The First XI look reasonably safe at mid table, but the Second XI need to fight hard to avoid falling into the relegation zone.
- 18th July - First XI Win against Camberley, Colts win against Simon Yorke XI, Sunday Team field a squad and Tim gets 95! - The first win on the First XIs winback campaign, this week against Camberley. Unfortunately the Second XI couldn't make it a double playing their seconds at home. Peter's Sunday Squad turned out against the Jack Frost XI and although they weren't usccessful, a great day was had by all.
The Academy goes from strength to strength with record numbers attending again this Friday. On Sunday, The Academy XI won their first match beating Simon Yorke XI (which also contained 5 Academy players) by 27 runs. Tom Cullen 18no and Joe Rossi 15no starred with the bat and A's players, Sam Moore and seven year old Thomas Yorke starred with the ball for the Simon Yorke XI with both taking 2 wickets in the 113-4 off 20 overs. In reply Simon Yorke XI ended 86-6 off 20 overs with Oliver Pocock, a cousin of two A's and hopefully a future A's player (!) top scoring with 22no. Chris Smith and debutant leg-spinner Dominic Worth both bowled excellently for the A's. Will Davis and Jonny Tribe (who also scored 11 with the bat on debut) also bowled well as we have come to expect from them.
There is no Academy session this Friday due to the Lord's test match but the next home match is next Sunday against near neighbours, Weybridge. The match starts at 10am, all welcome as usual. The team for the match (in probable batting order) is:-
Thomas Banks (capt)
Jonathan Tribe
Rob Partridge
Joe Rossi
William Grant
Harrison Moore
Ben Yorke (wkt)
Will Davis
Rob Gibson
Dominic Worth
George Mather
12th Man: Toby Webb
- 11th July - 2 wins at the weekend and a fabulous Colts match against Claygate. - Both the First XI and Second XI recorded wins when it counted (and on both occasions left it a tad late for comfort) to bring home 26 points for the club. The First XI beat Sunbury away leaving a somewhat miffed opposition to lick their wounds and rue the day thaty they thought they were facing an easy opposition. The second XI beat Limpsfield at home with the last two runs required being carefully acquired over 3 or more overs! Friday's Academy Session saw over 30 Colts on the field and although Sundays Under 12's Colts match against Claygate saw the A's losing by just 37 runs, it was an invaluable experience for our new squad who show great promise for 2006. With new Colts joining each week, we seem to have more than rounded the corner! Unfortunately the Sunday adults game was called off (again) due to a shortage of players. Well, after a couple of early season wins for both sides there has not been much to cheer about in the last four games.
'State of the Nation' or 'Mid Term Report' - The Firsts have got into a couple of decent positions, either batting or bowling well but the sides in this league are not mugs and you have to perform in all areas of these games to get the points. With nine games to go the aim is a positive finish to the season - 4 + wins, good availability and everyone taking pride in both their game and more importantly - "The A's".
The Two's have struggled. Five consecutive loses does not quite tell the story, but teams of 9 and 10 for the last two weeks does. Numbers have been hit by call ups to the Ones but a lot of players have not played more than half the games which just is not good enough. We need two wins to ensure there is not a relegation battle and a strong side Saturday against one of the teams below us is a good start. The target - again 4 + wins and a strong finish with all the players performing to their ability.
Dates for your diary
Sunday July 31st - The First Club 20/20 Competition!!
Four sides - two semis and a final - coloured clothing - music - family day etc etc. And yes - we are running it!!
We will want everyone there supporting - with the strongest team the A's can field winning the cup!
- 5th July - A special message of thanks from the President - Following a fairly active social month at the Avorians, I would like to express my most sincere thanks to the following people who worked so hard to help make the Ascot Day and Presidents Day so successful:
To Roger Watson from Watsons Bakeries, West Horsley, Cobham, Ripley & Fetcham for their kind and generous contribution to the President’s Family Fun Day.
To Frank & Bridget Saunders for arranging the catering & working tirelessly all day Sunday, and also for donating so much equipment for the kitchen and bar. Without the new fridges and dishwasher life would have been a lot more difficult!
To Barry Rimmer for giving so much of his valuable time and equipment to set up plasma screens. Without these, together with the help of Gary Lewis, we wouldn’t have been able to hold the Ascot Day.
To Andy and Emma Bell for so ably setting up the “betting shop” and to Peter Baillie and Hannah for keeping bar.
Last but by no means least I would like to thank Steve Lewis for all the time given to taking photos of the teams and colts, and to David Miller for so ably maintaining the website & keeping everyone up to date with the events.

- 1st, 2nd, 3rd July - Colts, Summer Ball & Presidents Day
July Committee Meeting Reminder This evening at 8.00pm at the Clubhouse - Colts - The Foxes beat the Dragons by 2 wickets at our inter-club Academy match on Friday evening. The Dragons IX made 50-2 in their 14 overs but the Foxes VIII overcame them in the 12th over for the loss of 4 wickets. There were many performances of note but Darren would like to single out 2 under 9s who played – Niall Saunders and Thomas Yorke – both of whom picked up one of the few wickets to fall. A great effort against 11 and 12 year olds! The future of the club is looking in safe hands. The under 12s team has been announced for the first match this Sunday against Claygate (Colts Fixtures) to be played at home. We urgently need a scorer and an umpire for this 10am start – if you can help please let Darren know ASAP on 0771 007 8114 or academy@avorianscc.co.uk. All members are welcome down at the club to watch – I’m sure our Academy players would like to see a good turnout! - Cricket - A disappointing weekend with both the First and Second XI losing their respective Matches - Avorians First XI - 86 all out in 27.3 overs (t), loss by 23 runs Beddington 109 all out in 41.5 overs (b) - Maori Oxshott 172 all out in 46.1 overs (b)
Davis 92, win by 45 runs - Avorians Second XI 127 all out in 39.0 overs (t) - Summer Ball - Another wonderful evening with many sore heads the next morning ready for the - Presidents Day - which saw both a hog roast and a bouncy castle to complement the port. I'd love to let you know the result of the cricket but everything had got a bit hazy by then! Many thanks to everyone for all their help and support over the weekend. There are too many people to mention individually so I will avoid falling into the trap of missing someone out. The people know who they are (Pictures) - Avorians E Mail Addresses- We are being barraged by viruses so I have cancelled all direct forwards and will distribute all manually until this infux abates. - Sunday Cricket - We are in danger of having to review Sunday Cricket unless numbers and availability improve. Please contact Peter Arksey if you fancy a game.
- 28th June
Ascot Day (at York at Avorians, Cobham)
A quick thank you to Darryl, Sue, Peter, Barry, Gary, John, Carol and everyone who helped to organise the Ascot Day at the Club just over a week ago. Fabulous food (check out the lobsters above!) and weather helped to make it a great success in raising just over £1000 for the club. More photos of the day can be viewed in the picture library.

This 16 overs a side match starts at 6.30pm prompt so if you can be down at the club – in full cricket gear bringing pads, boxes, bats, helmets etc if you have them – that would be excellent.

First Colts match against Weybridge to be played at home
The match against Weybridge has been scheduled for the 24th July and will be played at home. Darrren urges all Colts to revisit the Colts Fixtures page to resubmit their availablity for the upcoming matches.
Summer Ball and Presidents Day Weekend
The most exciting weekend of the year is now upon us and David and Em have asked me to remind everyone that it their last chance to confirm table numbers and pay for their tickets for the Summer Ball on Saturday night. Places are still available so it's not too late. (DJ can be reached on 07768 710616)
Presidents Day (Sunday)
Darrly and Sue look forward to greeting all their invited guests on Sunday for the Presidents lunch. This should finish around 2.30pm when the afternoon open up to all members and friends for an afternoon of Bouncy Castles, Hog Roasts and other assorted entertainment. (Many thanks to Frank and Bridget for all their geneorous help). The Presidents XI will be playing the Chairmans XI so the afternoon promises to be another date not to miss. Everyone is welcome so we look forward to seeing you all for 2.30pm onwards.
New Sponsors
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome back Trenchard Arlidge and Runnymede Homes as Gold Sponsors for 2005. So impressed are they with clubs efforts over the last year and a half that they have again stepped forward to help fund our efforts. We thank them for their continued support and hope this long standing relationship will continue.
Ffk
The Colts Academy Sponsors have been reaching wider sudiences recently when they sponsored the recent England Under 21 Matches. A picture of the hoardings can be seen below.
Cricket Results
Torrential downpours prior to both matches resulted in a less than successful weekend. All the results, league tables and averages can be found on the website.
- 11th June - Headlines only this week and apologies for the telex style. STOP. The 1's were away to Cheam returning with 4 points from a winning draw. STOP. The 2's fought a valiant match against Cranleigh just failing to reach target but still came away smiling. STOP. Next week sees the 1's away to Bank of England hoping to come away with a win to boost us up the table and the 2's play host to Addiscombe at home. The Colts now have a fixtures page on this site and Darren has requested that all Colts please visit the page and complete the form to show their availablility for this seasons matches. There is a combined Clubmark / Committe Meeting scheduled for 5th July at 8.00pm so will all interested parties and committe members plaese make themselves available to attend. Finally, (and it's not Frankie chasing match fees again), the guys organising the Summer Ball have asked me to launch a spam offensive until suitable numbers have contacted them to book their tables/plates. Call them now to avoid inundation. Finally/finally, the afternoon of the Presidents Day on July 3rd promises to be a great family affair. (Bouncy Castle booked).
- 4th June 26 Points! - At last the A's seem to be finding their true form with the 1's scoring a resounding win over Walton at home dismissing them for 142 in 45 overs. Apparently their international was a 'little miffed' to have to return to the clubhouse so early. 32 overs later the 1's had notched up 144 runs with the loss of just 5 wickets. Special mention must go out to the Caveman for both his barnstorming batting display and his outstanding caught and bowled. The 2's were away to Farncombe and after putting them in to bat, dismissed them for 150 in 39.1 overs. Coming in to bat, only 4 wickets fell before Farncombe's total was overtaken after 35 overs. I've yet to hear the results from Sunday, but wouldn't a hat trick be great!
The 1's now sit mid table in division 1 with the next two games away to Cheam and Bank of England, incidentally, 2 teams who haven't had a win yet this season. The 2's are pitted against Cranleigh at home whilst the Sunday team will meet St Andrews.
See the pictures of the 1's game against Walton
- 1st XI winning draw against Guildford at home. 2nd XI defeated against Chessington away.
- Frankies Comment 24th May -Top effort by the One's last week. My spies tell me they played proper cricket throughout - well done boys. 17 points in all on a rainy weekend is a good effort with both sides moving up the tables. Special mentions to JL and Cave for proper bowling in the One's and Nicky Fourstars for a marathon spell and "five fa" having not bowled for two years!! Oh and also - Phil the Fraud for his first league Fifty for the A's in twenty years of trying - getting there with 3 successive 6's. Then he holed out - but you would expect that! Well done mate.
With 23 players about for Saturday and a further 10 not available there will be selection issues in the next few weeks. The safest way to retain your place is to remain available and performing once you are in the side.
This week is probably Stevie Munday's last game before he and his wife head off around Europe on their way back to Oz. Stevie is a top man and it's been a pleasure to play cricket with him through the last few years. I'll miss walking up to him at the end of his second over and saying "How do ya feel? Do you think you have another one in you?" I think we should give him a proper A's farewell Saturday night.
Maybe a bbq - weather looks perfect at the moment!! Who's up for it? Stevie - I presume you'll have a pass? Last but very much not least - Only six people have paid their subs so far and we desperately need the money in! Bring a cheque on Saturday - £120.
- 24th May | First XI win at Streatham | Second XI winning draw against Purley | Colts first fixture announced - Saturdays win against Streatham brought the First XI's losing streak to an end and the second XI had a wonderful game at home against Purley which went down to the line with the A's needing 3 runs off the last ball. It finished with the A's gaining points for a winning draw. It sure feels better to have a win under our belt. (All relevant results, tables and averages can be found on the site). David has asked me to remind everyone to divvy up and get their Summer Ball Tickets this week. Peter Arksey's Sunday team lost on Sunday and we urgently require players for next Sunday. The Colts on Friday continues to grow in numbers and Darren has now announced our first Colts fixture against Claygate on Sunday 10th July.
- 16th May | Mixed Fortunes - Saturdays win by the Second XI against Limpsfield was tempered by the First XI's defeat at home to Sunbury, despite a valiant 96 by Matt Daykin. Friday nights Colts Academy welcomed four new youngsters to the squad with the first team on hand to offer assistance and guidance.
- 14th May - 1st XI against Sunbury - Two weeks into the season and a second loss for the 1st XI. We now find ourselves languishing at the bottom of the table requiring a much needed win against Streatham this weekend. That said the boys can take much from the game against Sunbury who are arguably one of, if not the strongest side in the league this year. We bowled a decent line and length on a very good wicket and with a bit more luck we could have kept Sunbury around the 200 mark – a target we would have been very capable of knocking off. A particular highlight was the fielding which we stuck at throughout. Nevertheless, we were left to chase 259 and with a superb 136 run opening stand by Rice and Daykes it looked like we were cruising. However, we lost the two openers in quick succession – Daykin departing for a blistering 96. The middle ordered failed to contribute – due in some part to good bowling but mostly to indifferent shot making. Some resistance was offered by Punts (30 n.o.) but he ran out of partners and the A’s ran out of steam on 197. A disappointing result but a lot of positives to take into next Saturday’s fixture.
- 200 Club - Standing Order Forms to be completed and handed to Cliff Hill. Visit the 200 Club Page
- 9th May | Great Colts Evening | Poor Club Results - Friday saw a great turnout for the first Colts Academy Outing for 2005; unfortunately a poor weekends results by the First and Second XI losing to newly promoted Beddington and Maori Oxshott respectively, marred an otherwise perfect start to the season. Ho Hum. For results, tables and match reports, see menu above.
-
6th May | Andy Bell | Chairman of Cricket 2005 - The league season has sneaked up on us already and the sides for Saturday are pleasingly strong. Team Lists are now available from the menu above for this Saturdays games.
We have a strong squad of 28 players however knowing the way availability and injuries have hit our youthful squad in recent years we need everyone available for as many games as possible. No leave and return on Saturdays for hols etc!!
Both DJ and I expect our sides to be challenging strongly for promotion by the end of August but this year will also be about making the club stronger. After years of superb financial help from Cavie we are now trying to make it more of a team effort:-
We need everyone's subs in quickly, this weekend if possible (£120). We have put match fees up to £15 but that includes a decent beer kitty. Great value for a days cricket and a chat with Lois!
Benny has taken over the running of the 200 club. The scheme desperately needs an influx of members. At worst join yourself but he would be grateful for a few friends as well. (Joining that is!)
Summer Ball. It is going to be the biggest and best ever this year. DJ is still fronting it with a team of well organised helpers "fine tuning" the night. It's on Saturday 2nd July. Speak to mates now and book the date - contact DJ, Clare, Emma or our Hon Sec for more info.
Daykes is back, a great boost to all of us and especially the bar take. I am looking to get his performances (cricketing!) sponsored so please have a look at the attachment and contact me as soon as possible. Scumps is also back, fresh from the ski slopes of Canada. If he can turn in performances anywhere near last years levels - watch out Division 1!
Everyone who hasn't managed to get to the middle so far in the friendlies please get to nets at the ground this Friday @ 6.30pm. We will be running these nets ongoing, lads from the Colts Academy will also be about and the bar will be busy. It needs your support to take off and DJ is making this week compulsory.
Good luck this weekend chaps - 26 points would be a decent start!
- 1st May | Camberley Friendly - Poor availability hampered mixed XI friendly against Camberley. At one point the overs total almost outweighed the runs. Chasing 218 DJ Umpleby watched the dismissal of various partners before Jeremy Hinds started launching 4's and 6's towards the pavillion roof. We finally succumbed for 78 all out. Photos here
- 30th April | Stag Dinner | Laleham Golf Club. - A lower than usual turnout for the annual lamb shanks (very good by the way!!) did not hinder this valuable fund raising for the club. Congratulations to John Lane for bidding and winning one of his own prizes! A big thankyou to our treasurer Matt Jacobs for organising another successful and port consuming event.
