Cystic Fibrosis Big Bounce Family Fun Day
This Sundays Family Fun Day held at the club in aid of Cystic Fibrosis was a great success attended by over 400 adults and children. Suzanne Hammer and Catherine Morgan organised the event with many committee members and volunteers helping to run the day and make it such a success.
Frank and Barry made a sterling effort behing the BBQ whilst Darrell, Nick and Steve hardly left the wrong side of the bar. Janets cakes went down a treat with Carols tea and I'm looking forward to trying Bridgetts Jam. I'll stop there as we're in danger of sounding like the WI! A big thankyou must also be made to all the stall holders and helpers on the day.
The total amount raised was in excess of £2,000.
Some pictures of the day can be found in the Pictures Library. |

2nd XI's last match of the season against Leatherhead
The second eleven closed their somewhat disappointing campaign with a comprehensive defeat by League Champions Leatherhead. None of the batsmen established themselves and the As total of 99 was knocked off for 1 wicket by a well balanced Leatherhead. On a more positive note, seventeen year old Andy Krusak showed some promise with the new ball and it is pleasing to relate that the match was played in a good spirit. We would do well to learn from Leatherhead who won the League with a fourteen year old, two fifteen year olds and a sixteen year old with a few older heads marshalled by a canny skipper.

A passionate battle against Guidford goes to the line, but just fails to cross it.
The passion and drive to win was easily visible on Saturday as the A's First XI prepared to play the final game of the season against Guildford on a soggy pitch. John Lane had done a fine job to make the pitch playable after the previous weeks rain but it was still far from ideal and luch was taken before the match to allow the square to dry out as much as possible. Everyone knew that a win was essential to prevent relegation with the added dificulty of Spencer needing to beat Banstead. Guildford won the toss and put the A's in to bat. Difficult conditions and strong bowling from the Guidford boys led to many wickets falling with batsmen still in single figures. The only exceptions were Prich with 28, Porter with 19 and Sully with 18. Saying that, the middle order strove hard for success and the resulting efforts showed in our final score of 128 all out in 51.1 overs. Guildford came out to bat after tea and some fine bowling from Andy Umpleby and Jamie paired with tight and effective fielding led to a few quick wickets. The passion was fired further as wickets continued to fall but Guidford dug in and when an appeal was disallowed after bails fell following a fine throw the A's continued to fight. With the final batsman in and with Guidford requiring 10 runs to win, the tension was high, but Guidford held there nerve and scored the last runs required to finish at 129-9 after 43.0 overs. Guildford celebrated hard even though their relegation had been confirmed weeks earlier.
It was sad that even if we had won, we would still be going down to the first division as Banstead had beaten Spencer earlier during the afternoon. The Surrey Championships First Division beckons for 2005, but nobody believes that it will be for more than one season, and after all, it would be nice to win the First Division Championship two years out of three!
The second XI were short on numbers and were beaten by Chessington with one match to play before the end of their season.

The A's and Spencer must win in the last game of the season as we fail to beat Wimbledon.
Saturdays game against Wimbledon was always going to be tough but the pressure was intensified by the need to win to maintain our chances of playing in the Premier Division next year. With a pitch that suited seam bowlers, Wimbledon fielded four and demolished the First XI for just 115 runs. Even Scumps bowling made little impression as they merrily knocked him all over the pitch notching up 41 runs in his 4 over stint. Wimbledon finished the job in summary fashion within 18.1 overs for the loss of only 2 batsmen. The A's supporters who arrived after 3.00pm were greeted by covers on the pitch and cars leaving the car park.
Even if we win next weekend, the critical factor is Bansteads game against Spencer. If they lose and we win, we stay up. If we win and they lose, they go down.
Everyone headed back to the Avorians ground to watch the Second XI beat the Met Police in a very enjoyable game which saw John Lane and Cheeks score well over a half century between them before declaring at tea with Cheeks on 45. After tea, the Met Police came out and decided to make a game of it before being bowled out for 150. A well earned win by the Second XI helped by Clive Huggins inimatable and hard to face bowling style.
The BBQ was lit and a sociable evening ensued to wish Obi every success in the future as he returns to Australia.

Contemplating Relegation as the A's are comprehensively beaten by league leaders Weybridge.
The A's fielded a strong team on Saturday (albeit without Prich) as a win against Weybridge who currently lead the league would have provided a necessary boost for the last two upcoming games. A strong start saw the A's break for lunch after putting up a promising 113 for 3 (O'Brien 64). Unfortunately after lunch the wickets started to fall and we finished at 198 all out after 61 overs. Weybridge came in to bat and at tea we stood in a relatively strong position with Weybridge at 84-4. The momentum seems to have been lost after tea as Porter and Church proved impossible to get out as they notched up 112 runs betweeen them to give Weybridge the victory with 202-4 in 42.2 overs.

The A's defeat by Esher leave us second from bottom of tables with 3 matches to play
Scorching 90 degree heat and a quick departure from Prich meant that the 1st XI had a seemingly insurmountable target to beat Esher's 221 all out in 62.2 overs. A valiant effort by the team and 91 from Aaron O'Brien took us to 166 before the tenth man fell after 42 overs leaving us in the danger zone only one position from the bottom of the Premier League with 3 fixtures remaining. Weybridge and Wimbledon away followed by Guidford at home for the last game of the season on the 28th.
The second XI also faced defeat against Old Whitgiftians who won by 3 wickets.

Summer Ball and Presidents Day Weekend.
A great social weekend with the Summer Ball on Saturday and the Presidents Day on Sunday, but unfortunately both teams came away with losses on Saturday. Rizvi notched up 123 for Spencer leaving the 1st XI chasing 336-6 off 88.0 overs. A mid field collapse led to a final score of 177 all out. The second XI chased Purleys 228 all out but with MacDonald taking 7 scalps for just 43 runs, the A's fought their way to 174 all out. A local derby at home against Esher next weekend will be an important win to keep the A's from relegation. | Presidents Day Pictures

DJ's first Premier League Century helps the A's defeat Banstead
DJ notched up his first Premier Division century during Saturdays home win against Banstead. His final score of 114 along with Prich's 94 and the A's tight bowling helped to defeat Banstead by 209 runs. Our tail end attack on the season now moves us up another position to 5th in the league with 59 points. The second XI had a tough match away at Horsley and Send but Cameron Pearces 104 meant that we came away with 1 point from a losing draw.

Avorians turn the corner after a Reigate victory
Following last weeks loss against Normandy, a win against Reigate at home was a much needed tonic to hopefully turn the tides for the last six games of the season. Prich was back and knocked out 70 runs whilst Andy Umpleby brought in 6 wickets for just 57 runs.

First XI lose to Banstead and Second XI have to concede to Egham
The First XI are now midway through their season with 9 matches remaining. The loss against Banstead at the weekend sees them fall to 7th in the league with 33 points. A good win against Normandy next Saturday would start our climb back up the tables for the second half of the season. The second XI sadly had to concede their match against Egham.

Colts Academy Double Wickets Competition Results
“Last week’s double-wicket competition was won by Alexander Pickett & Robert Partridge with 43 runs off their seven overs. Second were Thomas Banks and Kristian Wilkes with 19 runs. Jordan & Nathan Gregory made 7 as did Jacob Russell & Mark Dodds. The overall standard has improved enormously over the last few weeks and we have some very talented cricketers in the Academy. If we could get them all to turn up at the same time, we would be in a very strong position.”

Spencers Alex Tudor on his way to 97 and a win against the A's First XI
A barren weekend from a points point of view, but probably not unexpected with many First XI players being unavailable due to other commitments. A hard fought battle at home on Saturday saw the A's First XI almost reach Spencers 297-9 in 66.0 overs. In the end the A's were bowled out for 273 in 58.2 overs missing the target by 24 runs and giving the 13 points to Spencer who have now opened up their lead against Weybridge at the top of the Surrey Championship Premier League. Spencers clash against Weybridge next week should be an interesting game. Notable mentions for I McCarter with 61.

Farncombe trounce A's Second XI bowling us out for 166
The A's won the toss in their away match and put Farncombe in to bat. Farncombe notched up a speedy 222-7 in 47.4 overs. The A's came in to bat but were bowled out for 166 in 47.3 overs. Notable mentions to Dan Lane for bowling five of Farncombe players out for 61 runs.

The A's bag new league record with 419-5 in 60.0 overs
With the First XI's score topping 400, it was decided to declare against Guildford at tea to leave them a total to 419-5 in 60.0 overs to beat. The decision to bat on to tea was in part due to the desire to allow players to notch up centurys. The final score is a new league record. Guildford fought valiantly but at close of play had scored just 255-8 in 65.0 overs. A losing draw for Guildford gave the 4 points to the As. Big hitters of the day were Prich with 125, Andy Umpleby with 102 and Shirl with 82.
Match Report
Second XI The second XI entertained Addiscombe at home. Addiscombe won the toss and batted first putting up a target of 277-6 in 43.0 overs. Although the As chased hard, their final score was 202-8 in 57.0 overs with Richard Spicer scoring 62. The losing draw ended the second XIs winning streak with Addiscombe taking the 4 points. |

The Academy session this Sunday was again high on quality but low on quantity thanks to the half-term week holidays. We are still a few players short of an Under 11 team and we are now actively looking for more 8-12 year olds, in particular, to join.If you have children or friends with children who fit the bill, please do encourage them to come along as the sessions have proved to be very enjoyable for those attending. Indeed the large majority of the children who have attended are now Academy Members.
Also, if you have any links with local schools and think you may be able to help us to get an introduction to the teacher in charge of sport, please contact our Academy Director, Darren Talbot, on 0771 007 8114 or academy@avorianscc.co.uk. With the continued success of our 1stXI in the Surrey Championship, we cannot afford to take the risk of having the club relegated due to lack of numbers in the Academy. We can also provide A5 flyers to hand out within the schools or local area so if you think you may be able to help with this please contact Darren.

With Weybridge, Reigate Priory and Spencer all winning at the weekend, the A's needed a solid victory against Wimbledon at the weekend to stay within the running. The boys did us proud by bowling them out for 124 runs off 55.1 overs with Obi taking 5 wickets for just 45 runs. Benny and his team stepped in to score 125-4 and take the win within 30 overs with Prich scoring a very respectable 66. This now places us 4th in the league with 29 points.
The second XI also enjoyed another win by demolishing Dorking away. In to bat first, we notched up 181-9 in 50.5 overs with Tim Liddington scoring 58. Dorking were summarily dismissed for just 34 runs in 16.4 overs with Daniel Lane taking 5 wickets for 16 runs. This win has strengthened the 2nds rise up the Surrey 2nd XI Division 2 tables placing them 4th, theoretically one win from the top of their league!

The Avorians Academy started in earnest this week following last week’s washout and was hailed as a tremendous success.Fresh from his century, four wickets and “astounding” catch in the league match against Reigate the previous day, our overseas star Aaron (Obi) O’Brien led the coaching session with former Essex CCC captain, Paul Prichard. We now have some very talented youngsters in the squad but there is still room for more children between the ages of 9 and 15.
We are hoping to keep the sessions down to less than 100 children to make sure everyone has the opportunity to get involved so we look forward to seeing even more youngsters down at the ground next Sunday at 9am to help us towards that target.

The first Academy Session on Sunday 9th May was cancelled due to the bad weather. The ground was under several inches of water and unfortunately there was no way we would have been able to get onto the ground. Next week we have our Open Day where we will hopefully see some first-class cricketers coming down to sign autographs and offer some coaching tips. Let’s hope the weather will be better and we look forward to seeing you down the ground at 9am.
Our first XIs second match of the Premiership against Esher (away) was also cancelled due to rain. Groundsman John Lane said it is one of the worst starts to the season for years. John is seen here inspecting the wicket with one of the disappointed colts Mark Dodd age 9 from Knap Hill.
Please remember that the Academy Colts Mornings will now continue every Sunday throughout the season. Any interested youngsters or parents should see the Colts pages.

A big thankyou must also be made to all the stall holders and helpers on the day.
The total amount raised was in excess of £2,000.

Ivan Bolton and his wife Sally are pictured here on the right whilst visiting the club to see the Banstead game. Ivan and Sally now live in Australia and took the time out from their European tour to drop in. Ivan was one of the original players who helped in the construction of the club house at our current ground in the Burhill Estate and held the position of Secretary from 1948 to 1951.

Please remember that the Academy Colts Mornings will now continue every Sunday throughout the season. Any interested youngsters or parents should see the Colts pages.
