Colts Academy | 2005 Match Reports

Sunday 24th July 2005 - Weybridge (H)
Abandoned due to bad weather. Match to be rescheduled.

Sunday 17th July 2005 - Simon Yorke XI
The Academy goes from strength to strength with record numbers attending again this Friday 15th July. On Sunday, The Academy XI won their first match beating Simon Yorke XI (which also contained 5 Academy players) by 27 runs. Tom Cullen 18no and Joe Rossi 15no starred with the bat and A's players, Sam Moore and seven year old Thomas Yorke starred with the ball for the Simon Yorke XI with both taking 2 wickets in the 113-4 off 20 overs.

In reply Simon Yorke XI ended 86-6 off 20 overs with Oliver Pocock, a cousin of two A's and hopefully a future A's player (!) top scoring with 22no. Chris Smith and debutant leg-spinner Dominic Worth both bowled excellently for the A's. Will Davis and Jonny Tribe (who also scored 11 with the bat on debut) also bowled well as we have come to expect from them.

There is no Academy session this Friday due to the Lord's test match but the next match is next Sunday against near neighbours, Weybridge. The match starts at 10am, all welcome as usual. The team for the match (in probable batting order) is:-

Thomas Banks (capt)
Jonathan Tribe
Rob Partridge
Joe Rossi
William Grant
Harrison Moore
Ben Yorke (wkt)
Will Davis
Rob Gibson
Dominic Worth
George Mather

12th Man: Toby Webb

Sunday 10th July 2005 - Claygate (H)
On Sunday morning, the Avorians Academy played their first ever match
against a Claygate XI. Fielding an under 12s team against a mixed side from
Claygate which included a few 14 year olds, Avorians aquitted themselves
excellently, losing by just 37 runs in a 20 over match.

Avorians won the toss and inserted Claygate who racked up 126-8, thanks
mainly to 32 from Conway (one of their older lads) and 45 extras (mostly
wides!). Thomas Banks, Carl Vilela-Mansell and George Mather each took 2
wickets and Will Davis took 1 wicket and held 3 excellent catches. Ben
Yorke also took 2 catches behind the stumps.

Faced with a daunting total - 100 would have been a more competitive score -
the A's lost 4 wickets in the first 5 overs including 2 run outs, but Thomas
Banks steadied the ship with help from Rob Partridge, who made 9, and Will
Davis who batted nearly half and hour for his 4. Skipper Banks was retired
when he made 30, but came back at the fall of the 9th wicket and ended 42
not out with 7 fours and 1 five. It was a fine innings exemplified by some
cracking cover drives.

In the end, however, the older lads just shaded it for Claygate and we were
all out 37 runs short with just over 2 overs remaining.

Considering it was our first outing and considering the strength and age gap
of some of the opposition, the A's performed out of their skins.

Next Sunday we have a match against Simon Yorke's XI which will be captained
by our keeper, Ben Yorke. The A's team will be announced on the day as
those not in the A's team will play for Simon's XI.

Friday 1st July July 2005 Inter-Club 7-a-Side
The Foxes beat the Dragons by 2 wickets at our inter-club Academy match on Friday evening. The Dragons IX made 50-2 in their 14 overs but the Foxes VIII overcame them in the 12th over for the loss of 4 wickets. There were many performances of note but I would like to single out 2 under 9s who played – Niall Saunders and Thomas Yorke – both of whom picked up one of the few wickets to fall. A great effort against 11 and 12 year olds! The future of the club is looking in safe hands………..
